Greenland is a vast island and, as such, weather patterns do change from one side to the other. The best time to visit Greenland is during summer when temperatures are above freezing and the island is not encased in thick snow.
Whilst summer is the peak tourist season, the winter period sees the beautiful northern lights. Although not as popular as summer, the northern lights still brings tourists from all over the world.
Like many Arctic climates, the sun dictates much of the tourism in Greenland. During winter the days are long and dark, whilst high summer sees the famous midnight sun appear. This is also when wildlife is most accessible and cruises can visit.
Below we have provided a season guide on the best time to visit Greenland. Like most places, there is no perfect time to visit. It really comes down to what you want to see and do here.

Best Time To Visit Greenland

Greenland in Summer (June - September)
June through to September is the peak tourist season. This is when temperatures frequently reach 10°C and much of the coast is snow free (especially in the North).
In the south, wildlife such as reindeer, Arctic hare and muskox can be seen grazing and hunting on the thawed tundra. The north of Greenland experiences the Midnight Sun during this period, giving active people plenty of opportunities to hike, cruise the fjords, and visit local communities.
Because of the low humidity, you can often get away with just wearing a t-shirt on sunny days. Towards September the Northern lights can often be seen in the south and whales begin coming close to shore.
June 21st is the longest day of the year and consequently Greenland's National Day. If you visit on this date you'll see large gatherings, festivities, and speeches. Make sure to bring some bug spray as plenty of mosquitoes arrive in summer.
Greenland in Autumn (October - November)
During Autumn the Northern Light displays continue to get brighter and more frequent. This is also the peak season to see whales of the coast. Greenland is blessed with many species including narwhal, beluga, blue, pilot, sperm, fin, minke, and humpback whales.
The temperature drops quickly during these months and many fjords freeze over with ice making Greenland cruises impossible. This period receives some lovely golden sunsets which photographers will love.
Greenland in Winter (December - March)
Although Greenland is locked within ice and snow during Winter, the country still gets plenty of visitors thanks to the glorious Northern Light displays. Greenland is a great dark zone and an ideal place to witness the Aurora Borealis in all its glory.
The blanket of white snow actually makes the landscape far brighter than you would expect during the long, dark hours. Temperatures remain far below zero during winter and wildlife is not easily spotted. However, because of the thick snow, this is a great time to go dog sledding.
You'll also avoid the nasty mosquitoes and packed out tourist trails - just remember to pack warm clothing. Early January marks the return of the sun in the North of Greenland and locals gather together to watch the first sunrise of the year.
Greenland in Spring (April - May)
Spring happens quickly in Greenland. The snow melts as fast as the temperature rises and green shoots begins to appear, bringing the flora and fauna back to life.
Terrain is still good for activities like dog sledding and ice fishing, and the northern Lights continue to surprise and delight. This is a magical period which sees beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
